Since March 10, 1959, when Chinese soldiers killed thousands of Tibetans who had surrounded Potala Palace to protect the Dalai Lama in his home, China has continued its repressive human rights violations in Tibet.
Here are some sobering statistics according to Friends of Tibet:
156 Tibetans have self-immolated for freedom since 2009; 26 of those were under 18. 155 of the self-immolations have occurred since March 16, 2011; 10 of them have occurred by Tibetans in exile in India.
Resistance remains strong. “Tibetans,” say the Friends, “are still demanding independence and the freedom . . . to speak their language, to practice their Buddhist religion, and to live freely in their own country.”
That is not a lot to ask. It is high time the rest of the world push China and share in that demand.
